LWD inaugurates irrigation system in Kampong Chhnang province
Kampong Chhnang Province (Feb 09, 2018) – Life with Dignity (LWD) today inaugurated an irrigation system, worth about $40,000 in Peam commune of Sameakki Mean Chey district in Kampong Chhnang province, some 20 km southwest of the district town.
Funded by Makela Family and administered by Finn Church Aid (FCA), the system, which consisted of a 250-meter-long dam, a 1,850-meter-long canal and a water gate, aimed to address the challenge of the rural community that is facing a lack of reliable water source for their farming activities.
The project, which started in October 2017 and completed in January 2018, directly benefited at least 227 families in three villages (Chrak Kov, Chrak Sdech and Serei Vong) in Peam commune. It can irrigate 450 hectares of their rice fields.
In his remarks, Mr. Pel Martin, Program Coordinator for FCA, thanked LWD for successfully implementing the project. He also thanked the local authorities at all levels, the communities and the Provincial Department of Water Resources for their strong cooperation and technical support to make the project possible.
“I sincerely hope that the system will bring many positive changes to the lives and livelihoods of the people in this community,” he said, adding that the project would enable families, especially women, to access water for agricultural activities and domestic animal husbandry.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mr. Sorm Meng, Sameakki Mean Chey Deputy District Governor, expressed his profound thanks to Makela Family, the people of Finland, for generously supporting the construction of the irrigation system, aiming to improve the livelihood of the poor community in the area.
Mr. Meng, who presided over the ceremony, tremendously applauded the great achievements and expressed his deep thanks to LWD and its donor for their active contributions to supporting the government’s policy to improve the livelihoods of rural Cambodians.
He requested the community take part in the protection and maintenance of the achievements for a longer use.
